My good friend and colleague, DICT Secretary Ivan Uy,
And the other personalities and guests at the Presidential Table,
Officials and colleagues from the government,
Our partners from the private sector and development community,
Our speakers,
Distinguished guests and experts,
Good morning!
Welcome to today’s event, “The Future of Philippine Connectivity.”
I thank Secretary Ivan Uy and the Department of Information and Communications Technology, as well as USAID’s Better Access and Connectivity, or BEACON, project, for organizing this event in collaboration with NEDA. I would also like to thank the World Bank for discussing necessary reforms in the telecommunications sector, as outlined in its recent policy note, and for you who haven’t seen that note, look into it, it’s entitled, “Better Internet for All Filipinos: Reforms Promoting Competition and Increasing Investment for Broadband Infrastructure.”
I am honored to address all of you today on a matter of paramount importance to our nation’s progress: the imperative need to enhance access and connectivity through expanding internet infrastructure. As well articulated by my colleague, Ivan, in the rapidly evolving digital landscape, the Philippines stands at a critical juncture in its journey towards economic advancement. We cannot overstate enough the transformative power of information and communication technologies. Access to reliable internet services is no longer a luxury but a fundamental prerequisite for inclusive socioeconomic development. Whether it is enabling entrepreneurs, farmers, or small businesses to reach new markets, empowering students with access to quality education, or facilitating the delivery of essential public services, ICTs have the potential to revolutionize every aspect of our lives.
With this vision in mind, NEDA supports the advocacy for the passage of the Open Access Bill, or its newest iteration, the Konektadong Pinoy Bill. This landmark legislation embodies our commitment to promoting fair competition and dismantling barriers to entry in the data transmission sector. It aims to reduce costs and expand access to high-quality internet services for all Filipinos, especially those in unserved and underserved areas.
Today’s event will serve as a crucial step in learning about the policy and regulatory gaps in data transmission and how each of us in our respective sectors can contribute solutions to address these challenges. I urge all of you to unite to support our shared vision for a more connected Philippines.
Remember that our journey towards the Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na Buhay is challenging. Still, with perseverance, collaboration, and innovation, we can overcome them and emerge stronger. Para sa Konektadong Pinoy.
Thank you.
