Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan received the East West Center (EWC) Distinguished Alumni Award at the Manila Hotel on January 17, 2016.
The award is given to outstanding EWC alumni in recognition of their accomplishments and contributions in promoting better relations among countries of the East and West. These may be in the form of cultural and technical interchange, significant career achievements, and continued support of the EWC’s goals.
Balisacan was a research intern at the EWC from 1982 to 1985 and a research fellow in its Resource Systems Institute from 1985 to 1986. Prior to his appointment to the National Economic and Development Authority, Balisacan was Dean and Professor of Economics at the University of the Philippines Diliman. In 2008, he was elected as a lifetime member of the National Academy of Science and Technology for his exemplary research and professional achievement.
He also served as the Executive Director of the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), where he spearheaded the cooperative program of Sustainability Science among SEARCA, University of Hawaii at Manoa, and East West Center.
